When should weight-loss medications be used?

Although medical treatments (eg Orlistat [Alli, Xenical]) are available, should be used only by people who have health risks associated with obesity. Doctors generally consider that the medicine is appropriate for patients with a BMI over 30, or those with a BMI of over 27 who have other medical conditions (such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol) that put them at risk of developing heart disease. It is not recommended that the drug is used for cosmetic weight loss or lose small amounts of weight. For more information on weight loss drugs, see the article of obesity.
