Therapy-related

Medical treatment may directly or indirectly cause weight loss, reduce the effectiveness of treatment and recovery that can lead to greater weight loss in a vicious circle.

Many patients are in pain and loss of appetite after having surgery. Part of the body's response to surgery is to direct the energy of healing,

which increases the overall energy requirements of the body. Surgery indirectly affects nutritional status, especially during the recovery period, as it may interfere with wound healing and other aspects of recovery. The nutritional status of surgery directly affects whether a procedure permanently alters the digestive system. Enteral nutrition often necessary (gavage). However, a policy of "nothing by mouth" for any gastrointestinal surgery has not been shown to benefit, with some indications that may hinder recovery.

Postoperative nutrition early part is improved after the surgery recovery protocols. These protocols include carbohydrate loading in the 24 hours before surgery, but previous nutritional interventions have not been shown to have a significant impact.

Some medications can cause weight loss, while others can cause weight gain
